7 TONGUES OF THE FIRE - Sushumna: The Sacred Stream

In the yogic tradition, the Sushumna is regarded as the central channel through which spiritual awakening and higher consciousness are realised. Often referred to as the “sacred stream,” Sushumna represents the pathway of transcendence, guiding us from the limitations of the material world to the expansive truth of our being.

Sushumna has been known to run along the spinal column, connecting the Muladhara (root chakra) at the base to the Sahasrara (crown chakra) at the top of the head. Alongside the Ida and Pingala Nadis—representing lunar and solar energies—it forms the energetic foundation of the subtle body. While Ida and Pingala crisscross the spine, Sushumna remains dormant for most people, requiring deliberate practice to activate.

It’s true location is from the nostrils to the centre of the forehead. The awakening of Sushumna is essential for accessing higher states of meditation and self-realisation. It is through this central channel that the Kundalini energy—our dorment spiritual potential—ascends, uniting individual consciousness with universal consciousness. Without activating Sushumna, spiritual experiences remain fragmented or inaccessible.

Activating Sushumna Through Practice

The most effective way to access Sushumna is through Nadi Shodhana Pranayama, or alternate nostril breathing. This practice is not merely a breath exercise but a profound method of purifying the Nadis (energy channels), harmonising Ida and Pingala, and preparing the body-mind system for higher experiences. By calming the nervous system and balancing the dual energies, Nadi Shodhana facilitates the flow of prana (life force) into Sushumna, allowing it to awaken.

Consistency is key. Once a solid foundation in fire-based practices—such as Kapalabhati or Agni Sara—has been established, daily alternate nostril breathing becomes a powerful tool for inner transformation. Over time, the activation of Sushumna brings clarity, focus, and a profound sense of inner stillness.

The Role of Rudrani and Sushumna in Fire Practice

As Sushumna grants access to higher states of awareness, Rudrani—a stabilising energy—offers the grounding and confidence needed to integrate this awareness into daily life. Together, Sushumna and Rudrani form the dual pillars of fire-based spiritual practices, ensuring that newfound power and insights are embodied gradually and meaningfully.

A Gateway to Truth

Ultimately, Sushumna Nadi serves as the gateway to self-realisation. Through its activation, the practitioner experiences unity with source, transcending duality and discovering the eternal truth within. It is the sacred stream that connects our physical existence to the boundless reality of spirit.
